Car And Home Insurance | What To Watch Out For With Car Hire

in All Posts, Car and Home Insurance

So they stole my car on Thursday two weeks ago…
I popped in at the local grocer for 10 minutes, only to come out and find my car missing! Thing is, the car park isn’t that big. I walked around it twice looking for my car, and all the time thinking that maybe I had just parked it in a different spot (Believe me its a crappy feeling!).

Anyway, the good news is that Tracker was good enough to call and ask what I was doing in Katlehong.
The bad news is that it didn’t take too long for Tracker to lose the signal!

I then arranged with my car and home insurance company to pick up the rental from Avis on the Monday after the incident. I was informed by the insurance company that I would receive a four door sedan with, wait for it…power steering AND air conditioning for a period of 30 days.
Since its winter I never really did get to enjoy the benefits of aircon, but dang, its nice being able to get around without having to rely on anyone!

On Thursday my insurance company called to say that my claim was approved. On Saturday they paid out less the excess, but then…

Sent me an SMS saying that I had to hand the rental back the following Tuesday at 17H00!

For flip sakes…
I pay each and every month a car and home insurance premium for 30 day car hire, and the one time I claim they give me a car for one week?
I even checked it up in their policy wording, and sure enough, they had covered every eventuality!

So what’s the takeaway here?

Make sure you read and understand the contents of your car and home insurance document. Heck, I do this for a living and even I was caught out (Which doesn’t say much about me, does it? )!

And you reckon it’s always a case of the broker being in cahoots with the insurance companies?
Now let me be honest – I did try to pull a few strings and get the car for a little while longer but guess what…they gave me the old ‘you know what’!

So all I’m saying here is be careful. The car hire option isn’t exactly what they make it out to be!
30 day car hire gets bandied about quite a lot, but don’t get fooled into thinking you’ve got 30 days to find a new car if your car is written off or stolen.

Don’t miss our next post on what I discovered when trying to replace my car with a similar sized one.
