Why have we lost sight of the true value of a satisfied customer?

by Brendan
Thumbnail image for Why have we lost sight of the true value of a satisfied customer?

I’m livered. Actually that is the understatement of the year. I’m pissed! I have really been messed around this week by a particular service provider and it’s cost me hours of extra work as a result of the downtime. I know you’ve experienced disappointing service at some stage. Who hasn’t nowadays?  It’s become the status quo and how truly disappointing is that? Poor service delivery happens so often we just accept it.  What’s happened to good old fashioned client service in this country? I tell you what’s happened – It just doesn’t exist anymore. Brendan, face the facts, you’re simply a number in the system old boy and they don’t give two hoots about you. That’s what it really felt like today. This particular service provider I deal with simply collect and collect my hard earned money every month and screw the customer when you need something from them.  It’s not what they advertise in their fluffy expensive  “We love you so much and are always there to help you” commercials of course, but it’s the reality. Client service’s in South Africa generally stinks and the rotten smell is getting stronger. Yes, this is a bitch session but I need ...

Guess Who’s The Idiot Now!

by Lawrence
Man with a dunce hat sitting on a chair

Don’t you hate it when somebody rejects your advice regardless of how much experience you have or even the logic in your argument? Take for example those of you who have children… Have you ever threatened your child and said that if he doesn’t start studying harder at school then he’s going to end up sweeping the streets (With every municipal worker on strike at the moment it might not be a bad career choice!)? I know I’m guilty. And let me guess their reaction…a vacant stare? A rolling of the eyes perhaps? Now I’m often accused of being sanctimonious when it comes to giving advice to others. “Mr. Bean, what you need to do is redirect the money you’re spending on…into your RA (Retirement annuity). That way you get to reduce your tax bill by…blah, blah, blah” And if there’s one thing I can’t understand it’s when somebody doesn’t follow my recommendations! Me: “Can you see that what I’m proposing will save you R…every month?” Client: “It’s fantastic. Send me the paperwork and I’ll get it signed and faxed back to you?” (Mr. Bean, I’m still waiting for that fax by the way!) So it was with shock and ...

It’s not an Oscar, but we’ll take it anyway!

by Brendan
Nick Stern Altrisk Director on the left, Brendan Els stuck in the middle, Craig Harding Altrisk Managing Director on the right

Last month I received an email from one of our life insurance product providers. It read something like this “Dear Mr. Els, In recognition of your outstanding contribution, we would like to invite you to our annual top achievers awards ceremony.” I must be honest, my first thought was, “I’m still too young to be called Mr and I don’t own a Tuxedo!” Now right off the bat, I need to highlight the fact that I’m not that fond of insurance award dinners. Actually as far back as I can remember I’ve always tried to dodge these ego stroking, black tie affairs. “Oh, it’s on that night. Darn, unfortunately I have something on.” It’s something about all the back-slapping, expensive champagne and high fives that doesn’t quite sit right with me. (You will normally find Lawrence and me enjoying a cold beer in a quiet corner at these fancy affairs, discussing our strategy to offer more value to our clients). For us it’s never really been about receiving recognition at award dinners. The only people we aim to please are our clients. That’s the truth. If our clients recognize our efforts (and many do), that’s enough kudos for us. But ...

Insurancefundi is all about making a difference

by Lawrence
Bunch of guys discussing insurance

Hi everyone, For those of you who don’t know me…my name is Lawrence. Right off the bat, I’d like to thank you for taking the time to visit our blog – and more importantly, reading my first post. I’m feeling pretty nervous right now.The reason for that is because, maybe for the first time in my life, I’m going to open myself up for possible ridicule! You see, we’ve been thinking about doing the ‘blog’ thing for quite a long time. Let’s face it…Always hunting for new clients can be a pain in the butt. So why not head for easy street and attract clients by ‘advertising’ on the internet? But it’s become something much deeper than that. Lately I’ve had the urge to become part of something much bigger than myself! Wouldn’t it be great to make a real difference in people’s lives? Look, I’d like to think that I’m already making a difference in some people’s lives. The problem is that I’m doing it one person at a time! Just imagine if I could help hundreds or even thousands of people at a time? Problem is that I’m just an ‘average joe’…what possible difference could I make in ...

Is there still a place for pushy sales agents?

by Brendan
Nobody likes a pushy salesman!

I was hit by a freight train this week! Not literally but figuratively speaking. It was about 14H.00 on Monday afternoon and I was busy working on a few new blog developments with Lawrence when the phone rang. The caller on the other side pulled me into the conversation with the usual “you’ve won a prize” and in order to collect it you need to be at our offices at a certain time on Tuesday evening. Now I know what you are about to say. “You didn’t honestly fall for that one did you?” To be honest, I wasn’t expecting to walk home with a brand new LCD screen TV. With the 2010 FIFA World Cup only a few months away it would have been nice though! What I was really interested in was listening to the sales pitch. I’m kinda in sales myself. Hold on let me rephrase that. We actually are in the business of marketing our services and advice that ultimately leads to a product purchase  but not always immediately. You know what I am getting at. It is a little more sophisticated than kicking down your door and putting a gun to your head. The fact ...
