INVESTMENT

When it comes to investing money, it's fair to say that everyone has a different opinion on what they should do with their hard earned cash. Why are our investment views so diverse? It's because we all have very different relationships with our money. Some people prefer sticking every last cent they make into their property.

Others like the roller coaster ride of the local and foreign stock market. Some of us just prefer to play it safe and keep our money in the bank. Insurance Fundi can provide you with enough good solid information about investment options so you end up making an informed money making decision.

What Do Houses, Surfers, And The Stockmarket Have In Common?

by Lawrence
Surfs Up Dude!

Yip, I’m taking about those dudes who get ‘paid’ to lie around on the beach all day long, smoke a little weed, pick up all the hot women, and get a great tan… oh, pardon me, did I forget to mention…they also surf! And before all the surfers out there get their hackles up…this ain’t an article criticising surfers – far from it. In fact, it’s more written in envy – but let’s face it – many people out there have the perception that surfers don’t have much in the way of ambition or intellect. Hopefully this article will change that viewpoint! And houses..? Maybe it’s me who’s smoking the good stuff? After all, what do houses, surfers, or your investments in the stock market have in common? Let me explain… Who would have thought that property was the best thing since sliced cheese way back in 2000? In fact, from 2000 through 2006, house prices in South Africa rose by an average of 20% per year. You could do no wrong by buying property and selling off plan was all the rage. Unfortunately it all came to a grinding halt towards the end of 2007 and now it seems ...

The Reason Why Compound Interest Doesn’t Work

by Lawrence
Investment dice icon

“Lawrence, explain this to me… I’ve been investing R500 each and every month for the past five years…and now you’re telling me that my investment is worth less than what I’ve paid in? I may as well have left it in my bank account!” I’ve heard these same words so many times in the past that I thought I’d address this right now once and for all. As with most calamities there’s always two sides to the story. One side of the story has to do with the “myth” of compound interest…and the other side of the story has to do with exit strategies! Today let’s kick off the discussion by explaining… What exactly is compound interest? Ever heard the story about the one grain of rice? Well here’s how the story goes (my version anyway)… The evil rajah (let’s call him Bob!) believes he’s the fairest ruler in the land. While hoarding millions of tons of rice for himself, his people are starving! Now Bob, being a pseudo-intellectual, loved the game of chess. One day he decided to offer the inventor of the game one wish. But the inventor of chess wasn’t a dodo*. He asked for the following: ...

If you buy a ticket, expect a helluva ride!

by Brendan
Invested in the equity market is a roller coaster ride

Do you have the stomach for the equity market investment ride? How many eighty something’s have you seen strapped into the “Big Bender” roller coaster at GoldReef City’s entertainment centre? Not many, if any. I mean can you picture it. The rollercoaster plummeting towards the earth at 100km per hour, dentures rattling around in mouths, purple permed hair being pulled straight back by the G-forces and walking sticks flying around like heat-seeking missiles! Not your usual episode of the Golden Girls. I think the sign reads something like this “Strictly no pacemakers allowed on this ride”. Let’s be honest, you’re more likely to find the retired folk enjoying a cup of five roses and a scone on the patio watching the pennyfarthings cruising up and down the street, knowing very well that risking a ride on the “Big Bender” could be the last one they ever take. I can’t blame them. Actually, I would probably be joining them. I take my tea with two sugars and a dash of milk, thank you waiter. I’ve bought a ticket before and had a few rides, but I’m sitting this one out today while I write this blog post for you guys. It’s actually ...
