Discovery Insure | The Second Best Reason For Insuring With Discovery

Firstly I need to apologise!
I’ve been bombarding you with information on the brand new Discovery Insure product, but there’s a good reason for it…They’re launching on 1 June 2011 (Next week Wednesday) and I still have tons to tell you about it.

Today we’re going to look at the second best reason for insuring your car and home with Discovery Insure. Believe me when I say that this benefit, by itself, would make them amazing, BUT there’s an even better benefit which I’ll discuss with you tomorrow.

Now if you read my previous post – “This is How Your VitalityDrive DQ Points Work” – then you’ll know that Discovery insurance is all about ‘points’!
And here’s why those points are so important…

Discovery has somehow twisted BP’s arm into giving you cash back (Flip knows how they do it, but anyway! )

Here’s the minimum you’ll get back just by joining VitalityDrive

As soon as you activate your VitalityDrive (which only costs R49 per month by the way) you’ll immediately be rewarded by getting 10% back on whatever you spend at any BP fuel station. So, spend R400 on fuel at BP and you’ll get R40 back.

And see what happens when you have you take your vehicle in for the annual multipoint check at Tiger Wheel & Tyre…

That 10% discount now becomes 25%! Once again you spend R400 on fuel, and you get R100 back.

But there’s something even better!

You know how one credit card is much the same as another? Well, DiscoveryCard is truly different.
Let’s say you decide not to go for the annual check-up at Tiger Wheel & Tyre…then regardless, you qualify for a further 5% discount on your fuel IF you use your Discovery Card to pay.
In other words, you’ll get a total of 15% discount on your fuel spend at any BP. On R400 spent, that’s R60 back in your pocket.

But let’s assume you did go for the annual check-up. Your 25% discount suddenly shoots up with an additional 15%.
Now we’re talking about a potential 40% saving in your fuel bill. On a R400 fuel bill that’s R160! Come on, who wants money back in three or four year’s time when you can get it back right now?

But there is a catch (well actually two  )…

You haven’t forgotten about the ‘points’ have you?
Well, here’s how it works:
You see the amount you’ll get back is limited by the amount of ‘points’ you have. Let’s assume you’ve got the full 40% discount since you had your car checked and you pay with your DiscoveryCard.
But you’re a heck of a poor driver and only manage to score 400 points in the month. In your case you’d only be entitled to 40% of the 400 points you earned (Which is still R160 I might add! ).

Now let’s imagine you drive like my mom and manage to earn 1000 points each and every month like clockwork.
In that case you’d be looking at R400 a month in fuel savings. Pretty neat, hey?

And here’s the second catch…
If you only spent R100 on fuel, then even if you’ve earned 1000 DQ Points, you won’t, unfortunately, get 40% of 1000 points back. You’d only get 40% of what you spent on fuel (R100).

Example:
R100 x 40% = R40 back.

In other words you need to spend at least as much on fuel as what your DQ Points are in order to maximise your savings.

Of course it can also go the other way…
Let’s say you spend a R1, 000 a month on fuel but only have 500 DQ Points to your credit. In this instance you’d only be entitled to R200 back (assuming you qualify for the 40% discount).

Example:
500 points x 40% = R200 back

So what are you waiting for?

If Discovery Insure sound like something that would be of benefit to you (and let’s face it…who can speed, slam on brakes, and tear around corners in rush hour traffic anyway?) then apply for that DiscoveryCard now!

I see another (BIG) catch – but I think it’s still a great deal:

As soon as claims occur the member will not receive any DQ Points until another 12 month period from the claim date. This means that if you have zero DQ points then your cashback on fuel will also be R0 (for 12 months).

So, before claiming, take into account the excess (R500 for windscreen or theft of sound equipment; R2,000 for collision or write-off) as well as the lost benefits (eg: cashback on fuel for 12 months after the claim). This means, the higher your DQ points are and the more you spend on petrol per month, then it’s not worth your while to claim for anything less than R2,000+(12x monthly cashback).

      Hi Handy Tipper,

The DQ points is not impacted at all by claims.

What we can safely assume is that DQ points will be used to determine your premium for the following year.
DQ points are determined by how you drive, time of day when you drive, and other factors such as regular servicing and inspection of your car.
To repeat – a claim does not disqualify you from earning points at all.

      Regards

      Lawrence
