I recently over indulged a little. Ok, maybe more than a little.
Perhaps it was the some of the Christmas silly season festivities spilling over into 2010. We had arranged a quick dinner with family at a new restaurant in our area and let’s just say that one bottle of red wine turned into many bottles of wine and before we knew it was tequila shots and boogie -woogie until the wee hours of the morning. Good fun was had by all, but a few of us, and I include myself in that headcount, were more than a little tipsy..hiccup.
Luckily for me, my wife was wearing the “responsible adult” hat that evening and was in great shape to navigate us home safely. But if she wasn’t, what was the alternative?
If you have been in this situation before (too drunk to be driving yourself home), then you know as well as I do that it’s a pretty darn scary situation to find yourself in. If you don’t have a sober mate or family member around to take on the chauffer responsibilities then what are your options? Phone a friend at two thirty in the morning? Sober up by taking a brisk 20 kilometer jog home? Sleep it off in your car and run the risk of waking up the next morning in a dodgy chop shop? Let’s just say that while you do have options and any one of them is better than trying to drive home drunk and adding to the carnage on our roads, those options are pretty limited. It’s not like you can hail down a cab!
But necessity breads innovation and it’s about time an insurance company came up with an initiative like this one.
Momentum Short Term Insurance has partnered up Good Fellas, a company that provides an alternative to drinking and driving. Yip, these guys drive you back home in your own car when you shouldn’t be driving at all. Now that is an innovative insurance offering if you ask me. So how does it work?
Once subscribed to the service you simply call the guys at Good Fellas when you are ready to leave the party and a driver will arrange to pick you up within 45 minutes. You are driven home in your car by the Good Fellas’ driver and a support staff member will collect your driver from your home. You can also stipulate a collection time by simply ensuring that you call and make prior arrangements.
How about we run through a few frequently asked questions?
Why should you join the Momentum and Good Fellas initiative?
Let’s start with the saving of 70% off the Good Fellas monthly subscription fee and something called a little piece of mind knowing that you are guaranteed a safe journey home.
What does it cost?
In conjunction with Momentum this benefit costs an additional R20 per month over and above your short term insurance policy premium. So, yes, it is a benefit you need to add onto your short term insurance policy and you need to be a Momentum Short Term Insurance client to qualify. Good Fellas charges a prevailing rate per kilometer traveled on the night and a minimum 15 kilometer charge always applies.
Will you be charged for cancelled call outs?
A minimum journey charge applies to cancellations which are cancelled within one hour of the agreed collection time. Sounds fair to me – nobody likes having their time wasted.
Can I drop my friends off along the route?
Yes, all you need to provide their addresses when you call the Good Fellas call centre.
Can Good Fellas take me home if I do not have my vehicle with me?
Nope. You need to be transported in your Momentum insured vehicle because Momentum will cover that vehicle while it’s being driven by a Good Fellas driver.
Where does the Good Fellas service operate?
Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, East London and Port Elizabeth
Can I arrange a driver in the early hours of the morning?
Yes, provided that you give the call centre a ring before it closes at 2am in the morning.
Wow, this really is a step in the right direction and I like the fact that a short term insurer like Momentum has looked at adding additional key benefits to their product offering. We all require standard short term insurance covers like theft and damage, but when companies start looking at what else they can do to add more value to their policy holders, they get my stamp of approval for trying to personalize their cover.
Cheers to innovative insurance offerings. If you would like more information about Momentum’s Short Term Insurance offering or if you have any feedback on the guys at GoodFellas we would be happy to hear from you. Simply drop us a line via our contact page, or comment on this blog post.
