In my previous article about Discovery Insure I mentioned what was discussed at the launch.
Today we’re going into more detail on what they hope to achieve with this new venture…
Discovery’s “Driving Motorvation” for introducing Discovery Insure was threefold:
- They want to reduce the cost of car and home insurance by incentivising us to change our driving behaviour.
- By getting us to drive better they’re prepared to give us money back (I can already hear the cynics!
) - They want to make the roads safer for their Discovery Health and Life clients
So let’s kick off with point one…
Incentivising us to change our driving behaviour!
How do they plan on doing that?
I don’t know about you but driving is one of the few pleasures I have in life.
Personally I love corners…When other people slow down, I accelerate! So what could they possibly offer me to take corners at normal speeds?
What they’ve done is come up with a three dimensional accelerometer and global positioning system (GPS) known as DQ-Track which keeps track of:
- How you drive (Harsh braking, acceleration, and high cornering speeds which increase the risk of losing control)
- High risk behaviour (This has to do with how often you drive at night on weekends…Since when was going out on weekends high risk?
) - How far you drive
DQ-Track measures how much force you place on your vehicle. When this force is excessive, DQ-Track records this and builds a driver behavioural profile (Big brother’s watching! 
).
DQ-Track also identifies how frequently you are on the road at high risk times.
Anyway, all this information is fed into a computer which uses a driver profile algorithm to measure driver performance. The result, Ladies and Gentleman, is your Driver Quotient!
Driver Quotient is a holistic measure of how well you drive.
The better you drive the more points you score which brings us to…
They’ll give you money back in return for good driving!
Because you drive safer, belong to VitalityDrive, and use their DiscoveryCard, they’ll reward you with up to 40% on the fuel you spend (Wait till I tell you about the 80% they’re willing to give you, but more about that later!) at BP fuel stations. Not bad being able to spend R1, 000 at BP and getting R400 of that back, is it? It all depends of course, on how many points you have! 
Making the roads safer for their clients!
Discovery Insure has developed a set of tools to protect your family:
- VitalityDrive FamilyProtector which sends an SMS to you when your family starts and ends their journey. There’s also an online tool called DQ Mapper which will allow you to plan your routes through preferred safe areas. And if your family is stranded in an unsafe area they’ll dispatch armed security response. Nice touch, hey?
- VitalityDrive VehicleProtector immediately alerts you when your vehicle’s battery or DQ-Track is tampered with or if the vehicle is moved without the normal ignition procedure. Then there’s Direction Assist for when you’re lost somewhere in South Africa and need directions…Or how about Trip Monitor, a 24 hour helpline which keeps regular contact with you while travelling long distances in order to make sure you arrive safely? Did I mention that stolen vehicle tracking and recovery is included at no extra cost? How much are you currently paying for your tracker or Netstar system every month?
- And finally there’s ImpactAlert which provides an automated emergency response in the event of an accident. Discovery will call you after receiving the alert in order to determine what type of response is required. The DQ-Track system will enable them to send emergency ground or helicopter support to your exact position (Which is also a dang good reason to be on Discovery Health!).
