people who think medical aids are a scam, think again!!! without it one cannot survive in SA. first and foremost one MUST have medical aid until something happens to you will soon realize the importance. I was involved in a serious accident, on life support and Discovery covered the R2.8 million bill, no questions...THAT SAVED MY LIFE!!!

I don't believe that they are value for money. I feel they could do better. However, in terms of innovation of products and the company itself, efficiency, technology such as their App, and being sufficiently capitalised, they are great.

Had excellent service when my late husband were diagnosed with cancer, paid all oncology costs of treatments. The few times I were admitted for procedures all were approved and all accounts paid, no co payment from myside.
They are great at paying claims promptly, website and android app very user friendly.

I am relatively new with discovery but so far im satisfied
Discovery has always been very helpful and efficient with our pre-approvals. We do find them rather expensive, and the savings portal gets used up quickly with children. It is challenging that certain scans and procedures aren't covered and that as a result my husband waits until he has to be admitted into hospital for the procedure to be covered. However the service is fantastic.
I am satisfied with the service however I feel that I am paying too much as a single person.
Discovery is on the ball I must say, they are expensive yes but I think I get the quality I pay for, awesome medical and they do not give me hassles.
Disappointed that even a hospital required scope exploration comes out of savings.Any Dr required exploration for a diagnosis should be a separate benefit.I just find that one goes without medication or treatment as a result.Find it crazy that if booked into hospital at a much higher cost to the medical aid, the fund covers cost.... ????Children under 12, especially babies should have NO LIMITS ... let the actuaries work out such an affordable scheme please.

i have had many health issues and in hospital many times. discovery was excellant in terms of payment of my bills service etc.i will never change from Discovery. health rewards are excellant. i make sure i get my reward every week. diabetic insulin dependant.

Discovery Health is a very good medical aid, which comes at price, but does cover you comprehensively if admitted to hospital. The savings account does run out quite quickly when you have kids. The fact that we cannot upgrade our plans during the year, can become a challenge. Overall, the service is very good when you speak to the authorizations department.
Discovery is doing very good within the industry. It is very few companies that have personal relationships with their constituents. I personally think that the blog will help Discovery learn more about its constituents in order to keep delivering quality products and services, and in return will constituents learn more as to what Discovery is about and learn more about the company than just knowing that it is a medical aid company.

I love Discovery Best Value for money
Dental cover and cover for preventative blood tests is very poor - the percentage of the bill paid is so bad!! Why? This should be taken up with the dental association and labs. Also the self payment gaps are ridiculously wide - with medical costs today, it is easy to reach the self-payment gap very quickly.
Discovery Health is still after all these years, a top medical aid. Unfortunately not all can afford it, but when it comes to benefits and extra benefits, you can't go wrong. Working in a hospital environment, I know what can happen and have seen what Discovery will do.

They provide sufficient information. They are efficient. The only shlep is that it is quite a tedious process before and after requiring medical operations/surgery. The process involved is quite long.

I have always had really good service.
We have been on Discovery for many years and I have never had a problem with them paying any of our accounts. Most helpful too when you phone.
Even though we are on the basic option, if you utilise the plan correctly then you should have no problems.
I pay R2,671 per month for my child and myself and they wouldn't cover basic medicine like Rinex and mucospect anymore. they did last year, but won't cover it this year. they also don't cover a chiropractor or an audiologist. i understand it is the key care plus option, but on a higher salary you pay more and therefor should get more cover.
I've been with Discovery for years, and have had no issues with payments of doctors and hospitals. Authorisation process is fast, and painless.
I will most definitely recommend Discovery Health just to about anybody not on family as Discovery is the best. They must keep up the name and their excellency forever.

They money I pay is really worth the value I get regardig my plan. I'm a very happy member. Last year I took my daugther to remove her tonsills and had only a co-payment to open the file at the Specislist and some of the medication worth R200 I had to pay

As a pensioner, when you probably need the fund the most, you try to take the fund you can most afford but keeping it up as a pensioner is becoming a bit of a strain. How about offering a pensioners discount provided you have been a fund member for x number of years.However the fact that if I need to be hospitalized or operated on, I get full coverage,is a great relief.Previous needs have been very professionally handled with very little input from me. Still a bit confused about medical savings account ,self payments gaps, and above thresh-hold benefits. No one outside the company that I have spoken to knows exactly how these work and seems unnecessary.My tax certificateis also complicated since some of the self payments are excluded and on enquiry I was even more confused and has now ment I have to keep all my e-mails for the year and recalculate my medical costs.

We obtain pre authorization for hospital procedures and specialised dentistry which they do not honour payments. they find loopholes not to pay claims.

I feel that for certain procedures they should cover the full amount charged by certain Dr's .My wife was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago , ended up with huge out of pocket expenses , fair enough got most of it back from SARS , but hate owing someone especially when paying for medical aid.

As a single person and a senior citizen with pretty much an impeccable health record, it would be wonderful to have a reduced premium as a result - or at least some senior citizen options of some description.

I always thought that because Discovery is such a big name in the insurance industry its premiums would be excruciatingly high. Thus I initially went with one of those not so famous companies, which I live to regret because they were a nightmare to work with. But then time came when the premiums had to go up and my premiums spiked in the most absurd rate I had ever seen. I went to Discovery tail between my legs because I found that Discovery's premiums were so much lower; I had to ask myself why wasn't I with them from the onset. I have had no problems what so ever with Discovery, yes it takes a big chunk out of my budget but I think it's worth it. They are extremely professional and I have never had to phone their call center for queries or complaints. I have phoned them for advise which was a good experience.
i don't have a policy with Discovery but a member.I'm a credit controller at National Renal Care and work with all other medical aids including Discovery. Its is always a great pleasure for to contact Discovery whenever I have a query. The consultants are all well trained and friendly unlike the consultants at the other medical aid. What I like and appreciate most is that I will always get feed back regarding the status of a query.
In November 2017 my son became very ill with a very rare syndrome and he needed very expensive medication to treat his condition. We are very grateful to Discovery for timeously approving the payment for this treatment as we could not afford it. It saved his life.
My husband's previous medical aid before their company was taken over was far better than Discovery we pay close to I think 6000 per month and both of us are heart patients and now my husband has a chronic lung problem and I am really not happy with the service we get
They have a tendency to make deductions from your savings account that are not warranted in terms of your instructions and then they can't perform a reversal and irregular processing has to be accepted.
Friendly advisors and they always respond to queries within estimated time frame.I've had issues but they always explain and assist in insuring that my queries are resolved.
I do not suffer from any chronic disease or ever needed to go to a hospital. Most of the time I visit specialists, mostly the dentist and the service is great. All my expenses are always covered.For about 5 years I have been going to the same chemist for my over the counter flu medication. There I have been getting a very good service and I did not have to pay any levy. But now it is no longer my place of convenience because it is out of my reach. I thought it was the only place where I cannot pay any levy.But last night I realized I have the best medical aid and the best plan because I went to a different chemist and I received just about the service and even better. I did not have to pay any levy and I got all the needed medication.
I had not been on a medical aid for a long time when I joined discovery. It was a big step and I had no idea how to make a claim or what would happen if I were to be taken into hospital. The worst happened after a couple of years and I did end up in hospital as an emergency. I gave my medical aid details but was too ill to phone them myself and had to leave it all to the hospital admin staff. Once I began to feel better I followed up and found that everything had been paid for, no hold ups no arguments, I spent 7 days in ICU and Discovery paid it all. Later when I got home I had to register for chronic meds and the Discovery representative I spoke to helped me with this paperwork also. My medical condition is ongoing and my meds change from time to time, I have also been an in-hospital patient again, but no hassles with Discovery they have been marvelous. It is a huge relief to know It’s one thing I do not have to worry about when I am ill.
I am a Discovery member since 2007 and in 2009 after my daughter got seriously ill Discovery supported me through a very difficult time - i will never forget that and will be a Discovery member for as long as i can afford it. I will always recommend Discovery and only speak positively about them because they are great and they care.
Discovery has a great hospital plan but their savings account is very limited. I have 2 children on it and my daughter and I where glasses. Just one visit and medical savings is up. Not even mentioning that we need to go to dentist, ect. Also only one papsmear allowed every 3 years which is totally unacceptible. Discovery is very expensive and you have to pay in on chronic medications. They need to seriously look at a better day to day savings account and things like glasses, dentist, xrays, scans must not come of the day to day savings account.
It pays with Discovery to stay healthy. They do not only tell you to stay healthy, they tell you how and support you on doing that. They reward you for all your efforts. They keep their word.

If you are Young and healthly then a GREAT medical aid to be on but we have been on since inception and are still only on the blue level BECAUSE we don't run around going to gyms, having our blood pressure and cholestral checked every 5 minutes and don't join every possible company with benefits they are linked to. We are pensioners and don't have the time to do all of this and cannot always use all the benefits that they list. The payment gap is HUGE and we STILL don't understand how it works and the few medications we need, we end up paying for because we use up our savings. One or two visits to the dentist and your amount is used up and glasses are NEVER paid in full. We are healthy thank goodness, but we keep the aid in case we end up in hospital which has been the one great part of the cover. When you need the medical aid the most...which is in your old age, you will not be able to afford if but have paid for it for many years before and have been lucky enough to have had a healthy life but you are not rewarded for the years you have been a member or for not abusing the system. I think no matter what you do to keep fit, surly loyalty should be rewarded WITHOUT having to fill in forms and join gyms to prove you are worth the Aid! What happened to a SIMPLE medical aid that just covers you and makes you feel like you are looked after? WHY ARE THEY SO COMPLICATED???

My husband ended up with a problem and had to go to hospital. We had just joined. They purposely looked for a problem so that they wouldn't have to pay. Eventually they found that I had ticked something incorrectly on the declaration form. It was an honest mistake. The woman just kicked us off there and then. Second time I have been with them and have learn't my lesson.
I love Discovery in all their business aspects and they have friendly and professional people who are not rude(at least the one I dealt with)They make sure the explain the process of what is going to happen if you need assistance and followed it with sms with the same information, they will also call you to find out if you have been assisted and if it was a satisfactory job. so Im very happy. Have been with Discovery for many years, am now a pensioner and would love them to give me a pensioners discount on my monthly premiums as a reward for my loyalty, my fixed income is getting harder and harder to come out on.
Discovery's cash-back benefits are excellent, but the premiums are too expensive. The savings plan is limited and does not cover enough during annual periods. The benefit of having a hospital plan though, outweighs making use of cheaper premiums at any other Medical Aid and is the only reason Discovery is still a preferred Medical Aid.

I found Discovery to be very understanding and helpful with every query I've made to them. I have to date never had any problems with them covering my hospital claims and calling me to find out if I was happy with my stay in the hospital. I'm happy with Discovery.
My experience with Discovery leads me to believe that they are determined to approve as few treatments and chronic medication as possible. I have epilepsy and certain treatments in the doctor's or dentist's surgery can tiger a seizure. The medical professional recommends that the procedure must be done under anaesthesia to prevent a grand mal seizure. Discovery views this as an elective and I have to pay for it.
So far I am happy with discovery and I do believe that they can expand as they give great service.
I have had many fights with Discovery with regards my parents medical aid and I feel that Discovery is not there for their patients as they claim to be. My parents have been on Discovery for over 20 years and now when they need them the most, Discovery is turning their back on them. It is pointless complaining or lodging complaints as they do absolutely nothing about it. So, no Absolutely not and if I had any choice ever in my life, I would never use or recommend Discovery to anybody else.
I wish i read the contract more carefully. You just assume that you can take ure kids to the dentist. Ir that if a tooth needs to b replaced u can rely on them but no. Their answer for most things...your savings. Which is minimal.

They will look for every excuse not to pay accounts, even after treatment was classified as an emergency, and after receiving motivational letters from specialists stating that it was an emergency. Everything comes out of your day to day saving, which is a small amount in comparison to what you pay monthly. You have to pay in a portion for your Chronic medication.
Scale of 10-Discovery score 6.Discovery is good when you are admitted to a hospital, their benefits are excellent, but they are too expensive. We seldom go to the doctor, we have basically a hospital plan with a saving plan all we can afford currently - this savings plan cover's one eye test a year that is if you had no other claims you might get enough for new frames, both members wears glasses and we take turns although I need to test my eyes every year, we learn to live with it.Discovery does not cover scan's or x-rays if you are not admitted to the hospital or have a referral from your GP, you pay out of your savings plan which is limited- so do I get a scan or get an eye test and/or glasses? We pay cash if we see the GP more than twice a year. We looked at other options but the benefit of having a hospital plan-(which covers in the event serious operation or injuries which can cost up to R30 000.00) outweighs making use of a cheaper premium at the other Insurer's and is the only reason we are currently at Discovery.
I used to Love Discovery, until my son's car was stolen. I was paying cover for 438000-00 and when the idiots stole his car Discovery said his car was only valued at R328000-00 and that's what we got paid out ???? How does that work surely my premiums should have come down. We didn't ask for the car to be stolen and then we get labelled a high risk customer. (What ever) We lost more than the insurance company.And to top it all the tracking company is useless.

Discovery is very expensive, you have to pay in on chronic medications and your day to day runs out, because you have to visit the GP every quarter because of chronic medications.

After a 5 day stay in Hospital I was left with an R18K bill because they refuse to pay a lot of the bills because of technical loop holes.
I've been a member for 9 years and until now Ive been happy but being required to make a co-payment for my blood pressure medication feels like a rip-off considering the cost of medical aid and Vitality.

Discovery is out priced
I have been a Discovery LA Health member for the past 6 years and have always had good service from them. I only wish that ADD medication on my plan was covered by Chronic cover.
I will not recommend them to anyone as it is useless if your need a doctor after April every year.
I am furious with all the "free" stuff they dish out to the younger generation - like Apple watches, join the gym with your child and get R 1000 cash, discounts on flights etc etc, while I am only allowed to have a mammogram every two years. The vitality programme is a rip-off.

Discovery is pretty good but check that things are ok. Their procedures for getting chronic medication earlier than normal is a huge pain in the neck. They should really work on that. Vitality is good.

when you have to wait for an ambulance for 18 hours before you can get to a hospital you know that the med aid sucks! and then to top it i find out that themedical aid doesnt cover scoliosis!!! Bleh, very bleh

My saving cover most of doctor visits and normal medication and the hospital benefit is amazing i have been in hospital with my little one 3 times in two months and long visits including Easter weekend and the covered all the costs no problem
Service is great when I call in, the Discovery brand is well known in SA, and I am almost always confident that claims get paid when in hospital as well as over counter so long as savings is available but it seems that a good plan is becoming less affordable for the lower to middle class

I was one of them who moaned about being on a medical aid. Coz it seems you pay and don't claim. but there comes a time/stage in your life....(pille and brille) and you find yourself going to doctors and specialist more often. going for medical procedures etc. We have not since been disappointed by the outcome of the payments through Discovery. We are indeed satisfied with their service and promote them easily to friends, colleagues & family.

I love DISCOVERY. I've never had any problems with any claims and they pay very quickly so you don't have to stress.
The only reason we do not go on to another med aid is because there is a waiting period and I can't afford to have that with my lung problems. I have psoriasis and it is considered cosmetic so the options for treatment is limited. Mine is on my hands and it is a problem working as I am a artisan and welding, fixing cars, etc is my job. If I can't work, I can't get a salary.

Make sure you read the fine print, it is important to compare apples for apples if you comparing schemes.Although I don't have any against Discovery, they are good, paid my claims on time without question...I think I can get better value for money with a competitor and currently looking at moving.
I think that Discovery needs to take a good look at their business operation and offer their clients some value for their money and some service .. Communication skills are very poor .. that is my honest opinion ..

Having recently moved from Gauteng to the Western Cape I have really struggled to find a Doctor and Dentist to accept my plan , Discovery Smart . Most of the time I give up , and end up paying cash , even Doctors on your list are reluctant to provide a service......
I was with Discovery Health over 1 0 years ago and on an impulse I changed to another medical aid, which I regretted for a long time. My family and I are back with Discovery since 2013 and we have been looked after well. It's a great medical aid scheme.
Since I've been on Discovery Health, I have not had a worry about medical finance. I know when something happens to either me my child or my husband we are covered. They have great assistance in every query & we are glad to be part of the Discovery Medical Aid Scheme.

Although Discovery is expensive, I believe that most medical aids are! The alternative is unthinkable.I was diagnosed with cancer four years ago, and I was really impressed by them. They were truly professional and settled really promptly.
Discover totally unsympathetic to request for chronic cover for my wife who suffers from Dystonia.The only treatment available is Botox which Discovery refuses, despite motivation from neurologists.My doctor submitted a chronis medicine request in December which was subsequently declined despite requested blood analysis.Doctor remains unpaid despite numerous attempts to sort.

Discovery Health is a rip off. You pay a fortune for medical aid for the cheapest meds on the shelf and yet when you get a script from the doctor from their current list of meds and you get to the chemist it is refused by their system. Also I was diagnosed with diabetes and they refused to pay for the one tablet I am supposed to take. I took my script to the day hospital and I get my meds free of charge and no questions. That is why I will never recommend them to anybody.

They do tick all the boxes if you are on the more expensive plans except for cost being absolutely crazy. When you are offered the cheaper schemes and get told you have to go to certain doctors doesnt work for me.

Discovery needs to focus on the medical aid part of the business, rather than the vitality side. There's no such thing as a free lunch, and all the so-called discounts are being covered somewhere. They should stop changing benefits descriptions, as one cannot compare the real benefits one year to the next.
The consultants are very pleasent and helpful.In all my dealings with Discovery I have never had any problems.
We have a healthy lifestyle but the Vitality do not reward us for our efforts. Paddling and running. If they do they make it more difficult. Then they penalise you for not complying with their rules. Tired of it and will look for a simpler option.

Fantastic Medical Aid. Took my terminally ill child on the medical without any hassles. All the extremely high costs were always paid to make sure my daughther got the best care in the best hospitals. Even after she passed away all bills were taken care of. It was easy to apply for my newborn to be added. There is also many extra features like Vitality baby that makes you feel special. I would never change to a different medical aid and would always recommend Discovery to anyone.
My experience with them has been fairly good except for one major issue.I have an ongoing problem with them not paying for a chronic condition simply because the medication prescribed, a schedule 2, can be used as a treatment for both my chronic condition as well as a general ailment. This depletes the savings very quickly.

I have been a member of discovery health for over 20 years, paying a fortune in medical fees. First as a main member and then as a dependant. Now when I need chronic medication I do not qualify.....DH takes it out of my savings.....
I think DISCOVERY HEALTH MEDICAL AID has many ,many benefits for their clients as i do the Vitality and wellness screening, baby and travel vaccines ,also all the discounts on food stuffs and htotel bookings and flights , they look after their clients and better than other medical aid schemes

We do not have a medical aid, only hospital plan. So far we are satisfied, but not happy about the fact that we have to pay such high fine every monthe due to the fact that we did not have a medical aid years ago when we could not afford it.
We no longer worry about shortfalls on hospital bills since changing to Discovery, which had been the case previously.

Discovery medical really does go the extra mile, I am on chronic medication and my medication gets delivered to my work address each and every month from script wise who are contracted by Discovery. I never have to go to a pharmacy and wait in long queues, I have complete peace of mind.
We are with bankmed and the administration is with Discovery. They have a lot of red tape and never seem to pay in full. Something is forever coming off of your savings. The other day I needed Voltaren for a problem I had with my back. I normally would purchase this over the counter. NO now I need a script?I have been testing my eyes yearly since I was 45 with bankmed. My eyes seem to change every year and every year bankmed allowed it. Last year I was told to pay out of my own pocket?
When I was on the Classic Comprehensive Plan it was great because Discovery paid for my bilateral Cochlear Implants in FULL, this was 17 years ago. As this Plan got way too expensive I was forced to downgrade unfortunately. I'm now on the Classic Priority that is also very expensive and was forced to take gap cover too. Their email claim response has become extremely slow! Furthermore, I've tried to view my Plan Option on the website but can't seem to find it or am I just plain stupid???
Great service, with really very little problems over last 10 years plus. Only concern is when we retire it will be difficult to use Discovery because it is very expensive. Maybe its just a perception but we struggle to use an R4000.00 budget for three people. My spouse is currently the main member and myself and my son is on the same plan.
Dental cover needs to be reviewed, it is pathetic. In-hospital cover is very good and day to day good as long as you don't go to the dentist!
A strong medical aid, that is the forerunner in the industry and who we can trust to make the payments when we need it!I have never experienced any problems in terms of my claims payments and that is after all what we need a medical aid for.
Since being on the Discovery Medical Aid scheme my husband and I have never had to pay in an amount not covered by them. There claim, chronic medication application and authorisation for any medical procedures process is hassle free with quick turnaround times. My husband never had any issues when it comes to his chronic medicine claims. The highlight for me is that on the current plan we on if our savings is finished which normally happens close to year end we are still have the benefit of 6 doctors visits and only have to pay cash for medication. Discovery really meets our needs, the best medical aid scheme ever. I will not choose or opt for any other scheme I just love Discovery, because of the service they provided us I am always willing to explore all the other products and services they offer as and when I need to like Insurance. I highly recommend Discovery to all my friends and family for I always have a good story to tell about the organisation. My medical aid, investments, life policy, as well as credit card, is with Discovery. I felt comfortable with the brand and opted for the insurance.Initially the premium was sustainable but it ballooned over the years. I haven't claimed - it's been four, going on five years now. No claim-free bonus, no reduction in premium? It's odd considering how they splash their profits over the financial prints...I submitted invoices of specific valueables to update my policy. Apparently this has to be verified telephonically. On both occasions when they called I was in meetings. These were quickly followed with a "we have tried SEVERAL times to contact you without success". As the service provider, you should keep trying, no?Recently I put in a claim for my damaged phone along with assessment. Still waiting on feedback...

It's a pitty they have botched this up because I don't know how many customers they have on their books who have 4 products with them?

My medical savings is equal to about 1 and 1/2 months contributions. Due to high monthly medication and optometrist costs, this was depleted by end January. So unless I end up in hospital, I get no further benefit from my monthly contributions.

You are aware though that most of your monthly contribution goes towards covering you against the big medical expenses (like a long stint in a private hospital) ? While I feel your pain, I don't see any other way a medical scheme could structure their plans. Got any ideas?

Premiums are high and doctors are making a killing (excuse the pun) Its the law of supply and demand. If people could not afford the doctors fees they would not be able to charge them. Medical aid sustains the high prices charged by hospitals and doctors

I have belonged to other medical aids in my past and the service and value for money I receive from Discovery is 100% better. I feel like a person and not just a membership number. Effecient and competent staff who assisted with auth the times I needed surgery. I also appreciate the fact that there is no hidden fine print. Quick and easy Authorisation for procedures. Never had any additional costs while in hospital. Is however important to choose the right plan for your family's needs and ensure you choose the right contracted in doctors. Most people choose the wrong plan and not understand what they are covered for.
Hi Eugenie. Couldn't agree with you more. If you understand the plan you are on (and it's limitations) you are less likely to be disappointed at claim stage. Pick the right plan, at the right price and take the time to understand your benefits (or make sure your broker does his job properly before you sign off)

Procedures won't be done until co-payments are paid. If you don't have the cash at hand, why can't they do the procedure and then let you claim this from Gap Cover and pay them when that is settled?
Hi Andre. Yip, co-payments are tricky. I think we are going to do a series of blog posts on Discovery health co-payments. On this point "read the fine print carefully", have to agree with you. All of us buy very complicated insurance products we don't know much about far too easily.
Discovery is a good medical aid from Classic Priority but then you also have to take a gap cover which I think is absolutely ridiculous as every ones health differs from one year to the next. Their premiums are very high.

If you are on a medical aid plan, you need a gap cover policy. They are one of the most expensive medical aids available but are by far the best. Their call center employees are knowledgeable and efficient. The Vitality service that they have is great and allows us discounts on a number of products and services!

I have all my arthritic medication on chronic. because there is no generic for one of the tablets they will only pay R 50 towards it. I have to pay for the balance even though I have savings to cover it. So why have chronic medication. It is situations like this that annoys people. You also get people that man the customer care centre that are not medical doctors and they make decisions on the treatment you may or may not have.

I cant think of anything worse than joining a new company, then having to join the company medical aid scheme, then having endless issues and not being able to move.
Very expensive to people not using the Medical Aid. Huge cash payments required for Day Clinic procedures not covered by Hospital Plan.
"Take it or leave it attitude" - Doesn't matter how big your company gets, no customer should feel like this.
I have always been impressed by the fast and efficient service when my family or I have had a medical crisis. This reduces the stress of the whole procedure.The call centre is also well managed. So really you get what you pay for.

My MSA has been depleted because i broke my foot and had it seen to in hospital obviously, however because I wasn't admitted they used my entire MSA. This is absolute rubbish. Also I had 2 seperate operations at the end of Oct and the beginning of Dec that both had huge co payments. If I was on a lower scheme it would have been covered. What a stupid system
Hi Ethne. Ja, that's a tough pill to swallow! Exactly when you need the medical aid to kick in there are all types of issues. These products are actually very technical, and I sometimes think the people selling them (not all of them) don't take enough time to take the client through the "nitty gritty" of the plan. I would suggest you take it upon yourself to make sure you understand the plan you are on. Or, drop us a like at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will unpack your plan for you in plain English.
They removed Concerta off Chronic and this medication CLEARS my savings resulting in a thousands of rands Self-Payment Gap! By June I have no savings and have to pay cash. Unfortunately, these amounts are no-where near the R1000's required to close the ridiculous self-payment-gap before they cover further costs.

Most of your medical aid contribution goes towards covering major medical expenses (like long stays in private hospital) and only a small amount is used to fund your day-to-day expenses (medical savings account). The truth is that most of us will never land up in hospital, but just about all of us will at some point use the medical savings account for day-to-day stuff like GP visits. Some people go years without even using their medical aids, imagine how disgruntled they feel about coughing out thousands every month.

I recently left my details for a call-back and instead of just providing me with the information I wanted, the call centre agent just banged on and tried to make the sell. It was way too aggressive!

I think they are a bit too pricey considering one is not sick every month. To some degree Medical Aid fees across all these medical schemes is actually quite expensive in relation to the service you get back. There is no cash back options, yet i can count with one hand the many times i have been sick last year. In proportion to how much i paid and to how much i used, i am left being the loser, really.
Hi Bongi. If we had a crystal ball we could look into the future and see what was lying ahead. We don't, so we need to mitigate some of the risk that could ruin us financially. I don't know anyone who loves spending money on insurance or medical cover. But, it takes one car accident and a R1,000 000 in medical bills, and you will be glad you paid those medical aid contributions every month.
Personally for me this is the best medical that can cover all your needs ,the discovery mobile app is very helpfull you.can.check your doc visits and.other benifits aswell ,im thus far very happy being with discovery .

I do not like Discovery Medical. Ek kry gereeld migraines en het na die DBC Kliniek gegaan waar hulle Biokinetikuste en Fisioterapeute my kon help. Dr Noah het elke keer my aansoek om dit deur die medies te doen afgekeur nadat verskeie dokters motiverings geskryf het. Dit het van my mediese spaarrekening afgekom en nou is ons in ons selfbetalingsgaping agv daarvan. Die oefeninge en fisio wat hulle my gegee het, het my baie gehelp, maar ek moes dit stop omdat Dr Noah dit afgekeur het. Dit beinvloed mens se daaglikese lewe dat 'n mens die hele tyd met die pyn sit. Ek kan geen pyn medikasie gebruik nie omdat ek allergies vir alle opiate en Codiene is. Ander mediese fondse betaal daarvoor hoekom nie Discovery Medies nie???? So GEEN rating vir hulle nie. Dankie dat ek dit kon noem.

I have been in hospital once or twice and have never had a problem - everything was authorised and there has been no comeback with drs. wanting more money etcI have travelled overseas a few times and also have had no problems with the call centres and no query has been to much trouble.

I am a dependent on my husbands medical aid, I have been diagnosed with an illness that puts me in unwell situations, however I can rest easier knowing that I do have the medical aid should an emergency situation arise, my only concern is that certain procedures are not covered due to them falling under infertility.I am happy over all.

Discovery is a good medical aid and insurance. I have never experienced a bad service with them and their call centre agents are absolutely amazing. Lately I was assisted by Charles Radebe from Discovery Insure and i must say that he's very professional, knowledgeable and I appreciate his service. Thank you Discovery for employing the best of the best.

as with anything...the more you pay the better service you get. if you are on a lower plan chances are you would not be fully covered for all medication. however, should you go on to a higher plan most procedures and medicines are covered
Hi Cameron. They have a really wide range of plans, so they do cater for just about everyone (provided you can make the entry level price point)
With Discovery, I always know the amount left in my Savings account. I've never had any issues with claims, and I don't have to phone their contact centre (which I love!). Their emails are simple to understand, and very explanatory!

Discovery Health offers a great service. I have never had a problem resolving any issues and they are always responsive. I am a satisfied customer, however, the medical aid is very expensive, but worth every cent for the peace of mind as it is accepted by most, if not all doctors and hospitals.

Discovery is excellent in their customer service. They are technologically on top of their game and this makes it easy to use most of their products/services. They keep in the loop and do not take time to process claims. Am a very satisfied client!!!

A family of three(two adults & teenager in good healh)premium is +_ R9000pmof which R2400 is med savings.That is approx. R110000 pa and R330000 over 3years(without annual increases)If you were incurring such high med. costs you would be dead or unable to pay the premiums. I doubt you'll publish this.

I personally have never had a good experience with DiscoveryI am currently on this medical aid because I am a dependent on my husbands and this is what his company offers. Looking at my families experience, they too have had bad experiences. I have better service on my Pet medical aid!

Discovery is good in general, but does not cover doctors fees if not in their network of preferred service providers. Copayment out of ones own pocket is a bit difficult, considering how much you pay each month for medical aid.

The only reason I am not a Discovery Health member is they refused to accept me. The reason they would not accept me is because I was an ex Transmed member. My husband died and I needed to obtain my own medical aid. When I said I had only been in hospital twice to have my children, I was told they do not take on any Transmed members. I would love to be a Discovery member as I am currently with Resolution Health (since November 2010 and still have had no claims).
Hi Cheryl. That doesn't seem right. You should take it up with someone at Discovery Health head office. No way they can exclude you for being on Transmed.
since i joined discovery last year i never ever experienced any problems whatsoever, i am always kept in the loop regarding my payments, claims and what i am getting for my money. they're fantastic

Excellent support and service. Discovery top plans aren't cheap but you GET what you pay for. My father had a LVAD (Left Ventrical Assisting Device) fitted in 2015. His procedure and hospitalization account was in the Multi Millions. Discovery paid everything, NO QUIBLE. This is what you require and expect from a medical aid.

I like Discovery MA, their integrated products provide lots of added benefits (at an additional cost), but they are expensive. I've been a member for over 10 years now, and the family has grown, but no-one can keep up with inflation and the rising costs. The last 2 years have been the harshest with 10-15% increases each year. I understand that there are those that take advantage of medical aid services, but there really should be a medical aid rating structure (similar to insurers or credit agancies). MSA's are nice to have, but I do think people must be more responsible with it. I dont have it any longer, and actually save more money each year, than what DMA would allocate that year.

As an IFA and referral Medical Aid Broker I've moved 79 year old clients to Discovery from another Medical Aid - though there was the general waiting period of 3 months for planned procedures (most don't understand this waiting period, but as IFA you need to explain this properly to your clients then you will see only for planned procedures) Clients are now fully covered since March 2017 and almost twice the MSA they had and co-payments almost nothing compared to previous Med Aid, thus the move was worth the waiting period too and happier clients I won't get!!! I will most definitely recommend Discovery - always do, if affordable to clients.

Discovery have always given me great service, while I was in hospital and while at home. When you have a query, they are quick to respond and to resolve your issue. I think for the price, it is worth being on. I am also on Vitality, which is great to have as my son can watch movies at cinema for free and get to monitor my health with fitbit and get great points and rewards.

The time that stands out for me was wen i was in labor at Olivdale hospital, i never had to call my medical aid, everything was approved,paid for and make sure that both me and the baby received best care.They paid everything i never had a problem during my stay because my medical aid got me covered

Working for a General Practitioner, access to most Medical Funds' websites, I got to know most quite well. I find Discovery too expensive. Funds also run out during the second half of the year, like most Funds. I recommend a more realistic priced Medical Fund where the pros and cons are more or less the same. The normal working man can not afford Discovery. As a customer (married to a Medical Doctor) I only use my fund only for operations. Never had a complaint. They pay fast and secure.

Getting my chronic meds is a breeze, in the past, I had to go to Steve Biko Academic Hospital to get them. 15 mins in a queue, instead of a whole day. Most of my medical needs are covered, without costing an arm and a leg, or wasting a lot of time in government clinics or hospitals.

I am very happy with Discovery Health. When calling to enquire about something they are ever so pleasant and know exactly what they are talking about. I just wish I could go to a higher level which would give me more savings. But, I won't complain as I am lucky to have medical aid, which others do not.

Sometimes feels like medical aid is a 'grudge purchase' because not having it just really isn't an option these days. However, on the whole, not many issues with Discovery. But would advise anyone on medical aid not to take some responses 'as is', but rather to take the matter further if you're not satisfied. And make sure as with anything financial/contractual these days to get everything in writing and make a record of the times etc. you called so they can refer back to telecons. That stood me in good stead. (and make recordings of your conversations with them in case they 'are unable to find' them on their side).
